Physiotherapy is formed from the words Physical Therapy
* It is a branch in rehabilitative science that emphasizes the restoration of function, using physical treatment by means of massage, exercises and electrical modalities.
Depending on one’s presentation, he or she can be treated with all these means or by one.
WHERE CAN IT BE APPLIED 1. It can be applied in cardiothoracic (chest and heart problems). 2. Pediatrics – Neurological conditions e.g. Cerebral Palsy. 3. Medical conditions e.g. Backaches, bell’s palsy etc. 4. Neurological conditions 5. Orthopaedic conditions e.g. fractures and spinal injuries.
What Does It Entail 1. ELECTROTHERAPY: Involves the usage of electrical modalities e.g. hot packs, wax therapy. I.R.R, S.W.D., TENS machine. One’s assessment and presentation will decide what should be used.
2. MASSAGE: Massage is to rub the muscles and there are many ways to do it. It depends on what is to be achieved: stimulating effect, relaxing or aiding in circulation. E.g. effleurage, kneading, percussion, stroking etc.
3. EXERCISES: Exercises are done to maintain the joint range of motion, improve on joint range of motion, and with the aim of rehabilitating to normal function. depending on the presentation one needs to decide on the correct exercise programme.
The physiotherapist works very closely with all the other therapist and teachers in order to enhance proper positioning and management of the students.
